Project Gutenberg is the Internet's oldest producer of FREE electronic books (eBooks or eTexts).  All books in the database are in the public domain.  This means that were generally published pre-1923 and are therefore no longer covered by copyright.  This is a good place to look for the classics, "from authors like Shakespeare, Poe, Dante, as well as well-loved favorites like the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the Tarzan and Mars books of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Alice's adventures in Wonderland as told by Lewis Carroll, and thousands of others."
