Juvenile Books

Books that are intended for younger readers and that are NOT works of fiction are categorized as "Juvenile" books.  In keeping with the practice of most public and school libraries, juvenile books added to the collection of the Mount Aloysius College Library are cataloged according to the Dewey Decimal System, a numeric system in which numbers, ranging from 1 - 999, are assigned to general subject areas.  These are:

  • 000 Generalities
  • 100 Philosophy & Psychology
  • 200 Religion
  • 300 Social Sciences
  • 400 Language
  • 500 Natural Science & Mathematics
  • 600 Technology (Applied Sciences)
  • 700 The Arts
  • 800 Literature & Rhetoric
  • 900 Geography & History

Thus, a book of Chinese poetry would be found in the 800's (Literature & Rhetoric) and a book about the history of China would have a call number in the 900's.  On the other hand, a book about ancient Chinese mythology would be found in the 200's (Religion).

Juvenile Fiction

Works of fiction that are intended for younger readers are cataloged by the first letter of the author's name and do not have a call number.

Two examples are Where the Wild Things Are by Morris Sendak (Fiction S474) and Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown (Fiction B879G).

Location of Juvenile Collection

Both the Juvenile and the Juvenile Fiction collections, located on the second floor of the Library, are shelved on the outside wall of the Library classroom.  This area of the Library is distinguished by a variety of children's toys that line the tops of the shelves
